2010 AAF Guide to Aluminum Construction in High Wind Areas

THIS BOOK IS APPROVED BY THE FLORIDA BUILDING COMMISSION AND WILL BE THE REFERENCED DESIGN GUIDE IN THE 2010 FLORIDA BUILDING CODE (to be implemented March 15, 2012).

WHAT IS THE AAF GUIDE:

The 2007 Florida Building Code (AND the upcoming 2010 Florida Building Code), both Building and Residential volumes have provisions stating that the AAF Guide:

"SHALL BE ACCEPTED AS CONFORMING TO ACCEPTED ENGINEERING PRACTICES".

The 2010 Florida Building Code will be implemented in March  15, 2012.

This design guide is a prescriptive design method which, by Florida Statute 489.113(9), does not require the involvement of a professional engineer in order to design one of the structures covered by the guide.

With the exception of the wood framed utility shed, these are aluminum framed structures and these SECTIONS INCLUDE:

1. Screened swimming pool enclosures (including mansard beams);
2. Patio screen rooms (screen walls, solid roofs);
3. Screened walls in lanais (covered but unenclosed patios), and screened balconies;
4. Glass rooms (also known as Florida rooms or sunrooms);
5. Attached patio covers or carports;
6. Free-standing patio covers or carports;
7. Railing systems; AND,
8. Secondary covers (sometimes known as roof-overs) for mobile homes;
9. Wood framed utility sheds (with aluminum roofs).

WHAT IS INCLUDED:

• The full 2010 AAF Guide (as approved by the Florida Building Commission and has been be adopted by reference into the 2010 Florida Building Code, including the HVHZ zone).

• The 2012 AAF Guide Supplement to the 2010 Edition – this Supplement is now packaged in the file sent electronically, and all of the tables conforming to the use of ASCE7-10 are included. 

The electronic package is produced (and available) as one electronic file. It is available for download from the AAF website. This electronic file is encrypted and must be unlocked for use. After the file has been unlocked and authenticated (using an internet connection), the 2010 AAF Guide and the tables for 2012 and beyond (packaged into one file) can be printed from the computer having the file.

An internet connection will not be needed once the file has been authenticated, however, be advised that it will only be available from that computer.

If a company or building department requires multiple electronic copies, additional unlock keys can be purchased for $75 per each.

WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED:

Hard-copies, i.e. printed and bound versions.

Printed versions are available for shipment from the state AAF office for $100 per each [edition], plus sales tax and a shipping and handling fee. {Please note that the $100 fee for a hard-copy version is in addition to the fee for the electronic version}

AN IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING THE AAF GUIDE and the FLORIDA BUILDING CODE FOR 2012 AND BEYOND:

The 2010 Edition of the Florida Building Code references ASCE7-10 instead of ASCE7-05 (2007 Florida Building Code). Beginning March 15th, 2012, the current wind load protocol will become OBSOLETE. The new wind code is a substantial departure from the current wind load protocol and will involve new wind speed regions and new exposure regions. This means a necessary supplement to the AAF Guide for calendar 2012 and beyond.
